If you’re lucky enough ever to be romantically loved by Ye, you’re in for an extreme makeover. Kanye West, now legally known as Ye, was married to Kim Kardashian and has dated the likes of Amber Rose, Selita Ebanks, Irina Shayk, Vinteria Chubbs, and Julia Fox. Ye is currently dating Chaney Jones
Ye has made it clear in the past that his way of showing love is through fashion. He has built a reputation for dressing his romantic partners and making their looks match his aesthetic; he’ll go as far as clearing out their closets and bringing in new pieces according to his style. This behaviour begs the question, is Ye after a sidekick? Deciding what your partner wears implies a form of control because what room is left for their identity? His actions could be seen as a romantic gesture when you consider that Kanye wants his partner to match him or viewed as toxic if we believe that his actions insinuate that these women look wrong or are insufficient as they already exist. Are these women his muses or his “fixer-uppers”? Here’s a look at some of the women whose styles he revamped while in a relationship.
You can’t make this up.
Amber Rose (2008 – 2010)
Amber Rose and Ye started dating in 2008, and their relationship grabbed headlines. Their relationship lasted for two years, but Amber Rose occasionally had style transformations to go with Ye’s dressing style while they were dating. Her style was very colourful; she liked bright pinks, yellows, and neons. However, Ye’s style was the opposite; he wanted the natural, nude, brown, and bone. Ye often swapped her colourful outfits for nude, black, or white coloured alternatives to fit with his looks.
Kim Kardashian (2011-2021)
Kim is a prime example of a woman dressed by Ye. In 2012, while they were dating, Kim had a maximalist style. Ye took over her wardrobe and replaced her colourful bandage dresses, platform pumps, and statement jewellery with minimalist fitted dresses, gowns, and monochrome outfits designed by Balenciaga, Givenchy, Tom Ford, and Balmain. This was just the beginning. Kim was a muse for Ye, especially regarding his streetwear brand Yeezy. They were almost exclusively wearing minimalist outfits designed by Balenciaga until the divorce. At the beginning of the relationship, Kim wasn’t as confident in her style as now. The former couple reportedly had disputes concerning her outfits during their marriage because she stood her ground. For the first time, she made style decisions with or without his approval. She was finding her place in fashion.
Julia Fox (2021 – 2022)
After his separation from Kim Kardashian, Julia Fox, an actress, became Ye’s girlfriend. He surprised her during a date in NYC and early into the relationship with an entire hotel suite filled with new pieces worth approximately $100,000. This looks like a dream come true on the surface, but is it? It’s a little comical; why, after one date, does he feel the need to revamp her whole look? What was wrong with her look before? Should she be flattered or offended?
While gift-giving is a proper and well-appreciated way of showing love, how can we tell when someone is just controlling? It all balls down to patterns. Are you just being gifted items, or are you forced to wear them? Do you even like the things being gifted to you? Does your partner care if you like them? Your partner is supposed to learn what you want and act accordingly, not dictate what you should like. Your fashion style reflects your personality, mood, character, and who you are and dressing to fit into someone else’s aesthetic is harmful in the long run, which I’m sure is what happened when Kim started standing her ground years into their marriage; she was fed up. Never forget, whatever you wear should reflect the real you.
